What will be studied?
This course explores a range of subjects and particular
aspects of special educational need. The applicant will
cover all the key elements, including supporting pupils, colleagues
and learning activities, as well as helping with resources and
records. The student will also address the challenges of
the modern classroom by covering the management of pupil behaviour,
literacy and numeracy and ICT support. They will choose six
subjects from a list of nineteen possible options including:
contributing to the management of pupil behaviour; establishing and
maintaining relationships with individual pupils and groups; and
supporting pupils during learning activities.

What can the student do next?
This can lead to beginning the process of qualifying as a primary
school teacher by joining our Access to Higher Education (Education

What are the entry requirements?
The applicant will need to be an experienced teaching
assistant, working in a school for at least two days a week to
enable you to gather evidence. Entry to the course is by a language
and numeracy assessment and interview. Applicants should have
undertaken NVQ Level 2 or the Department for Schools Children and
Families (DCSF) induction training provided by the LEA. If you do
not have qualifications in English and/or maths, you will be
supported in gaining this as part of your course.
How will it be assessed?
Assessment is by a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence
in each unit. Evidence will be gathered from the work place and
students are assessed in various ways, including assignments,
presentations, projects and classroom observations. Students have
access to a personal tutor to discuss progress and to help them
plan their studies.
