Mayday Healthcare Trust

Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust employs over 2,000 staff and aims to be the first hospital of choice for patients living in Croydon and surrounding areas. Clinical Managers were keen to reduce the number of mistakes being made by some of the Health Care Assistants employed by the Trust.

Mayday had researched various training programmes on the market tackling English language and speaking training and were clear they did not want one of those programmes which just focused on preparing candidates to pass national qualifications and assessments. So they were impressed with the way in which The Skills People put together a programme which gave them sustainable literacy skills which would support them both at work and at home.

The Skills People delivered a 20 week training programme to Health Care Assistants which covered areas such as pronunciation, clinical vocabulary, listening skills, grammar and punctuation - each learner received one-to-one support from a Skills for Life expert trainer who focused on their individual strengths and weaknesses.

The Result? Compared with pre-training patient notes and comments from managers, post training evaluations showed some significant results including a 75% reduction in mistakes
and a 90% improvement in written patient records. Post-training evaluation has also showed improvement in other areas including staff feeling their co-workers treat them with greater respect.

Mayday NHS Trust"It didn't take too long for us to see how The Skills People training was beginning to make a real difference - which is one of the reasons we decided to use them above any other training provider. Many of the other providers pushed us towards the NVQ route which we knew we weren't ready for.So, it was amazing that we came across The Skills People who were prepared to work with us to ensure learners established their levels of literacy before progressing on to qualifications. It was impressive to see how The Skills People spent time trying to understand our 'Patient Discourse' - the way in which we communicate to our patients - and embedded this into the delivery of training.'
